In baseball, Central Lake defeated Bellaire and Gaylord St. Mary to bring home the hardware from Gaylord. Obviously, there were plenty of smiles on the bus ride home as the players took turns admiring the trophy. Bellaire proved a stiff test for the Trojans in the semifinals in what became a pitcher's duel between CL's Brent Patton and the Eagles' Rob Fischer. Patton held the Eagles to just two hits in seven innings, and collected two hits himself, scoring twice and driving in a run in the Trojans' 7-2 victory. Central Lake rapped out eight hits against Fischer, who also pitched the full seven innings for the Eagles. The championship game was tied 4-4 at the end of seven, forcing extra innings. Central Lake broke the game open by scoring seven runs in the 11th inning, winning 11-6. But their season ended in the regional final, where Rudyard outslugged the Trojans, 12-4. Michelle Edwards pitched both games for the girls softball team, which defeated Bellaire, 5-3, and St. Mary's, 13-3. Harbor Light Christian ended the Trojans run in the first round of the regional tournament, 9-0. Ellsworth's boys cross country team was crowned state champion in Class D after scoring 94 points to edge out Adrian Lenawee Christian School, which had 107. The girls were fourth. Ashton Fisher was the team's leader, finishing third overall in a time of 16:42. Ruben Oviedo was 10th, and Justin Weis finished in 17th place. Central Lake's football team shared the league title with Mancelona, and hammered Pickford, 32-6, in the first round of the state playoffs. The Trojans claimed their second consecutive district crown the next week when they held off Cedarville, 21-20, at home. Jared Danbert led the Trojans in rushing all season, and was a key in their opening playoff win. More hardware was added to the trophy case with the Trojans' district win in girls volleyball. "The key to our success was the up-front play of Jasmine Hines, Heidi Hicks, Michelle Edwards and Nikki Korb," head coach Elissa Shafer said. |
