Bellaire tramples Hornets

McClary's 26 points put him over the 1,000 point mark

BELLAIRE -In what was to be a highlight night for Bellaire center Mike McClary, the Eagles took on the Hornets of Pellston on Friday, Jan. 5. Relying on a stingy defense and McClaryÕs persistent inside force, the Eagles cruised to victory in a game in which they never were behind, 77-39.

The Eagles came out blazing hot in the first quarter, jumping out to a shocking 21-2 run. The cushion would be all they would need, as their defense stymied anything the Hornets threw at them. The first quarter of play was dominated by the Eagles, thanks in large part to McClary, Anthony Garwood and Cody Bock, who amassed all 18 of the teamÕs points.

After another quarter, the Eagles went into the half with a comfortable 34-12 lead. The third was more of the same, as early bursts by Bock and McClary kept PellstonÕs defense reeling. BellaireÕs sixth man, Brad Guy, provided another spark for the Eagles, coming off the bench and scoring six third quarter points to help solidify what was already turning into a stout and fundamentally sound performance.

The fast break factored into the HornetsÕ woes in the second half as a barrage of easy layups allowed Bellaire to keep the pressure on while the Hornets attempted in vain to come back. Another steller quarter for McClary not only helped his team secure an impressive victory but also gave him the distinction of scoring over 1000 points in his much ballyhooed Eagle career.

With the reserves in to cap off the game, the final buzzer sounded with Bellaire winning handily, 77-39. The dominating display improved the Eagles to an unblemished 5-0 record on the season.

McClaryÕs huge day and 26 points, seven rebounds and four assists led the EaglesÕ charge. Cody Bock scored 15 points, and Guy 12.

BellaireÕs 53 percent shooting dominated that of Pellston, who shot a paltry 31 percent from the floor. Ridge HahnÕs nine points led the way for the Hornets.

"We came out with a strong defense in the first half,Ó said Bellaire coach Stan Sexton. "We held them to five made shots out of 27 attempts. We did a nice job of pushing and had three players in double figures. It was a strong effort.
