ÊDoris was born May 29, 1925, in Cadillac, the daughter of Harvard H. and Gertrude B. (Knecht) Clark.

She received a Bachelor of Arts and a Masters in Special Education and remedial reading from Eastern Michigan University, followed by a teaching career from 1946 until 1986, ending at Central Lake Public Schools.

She was a long time member of the Central Lake Seventh Day Adventist Church.

On June 4, 1950, in Detroit, she married James W. Clayton, who survives.Ê Also surviving are five children, Dawn M. (Michael) Mantle of Weiser, ID, Virginia E. (John) Starlin of Grand Rapids, Dr. Bevin T. (Jeanne) Clayton of Ossineke, Mich., Dr. Kevin J. (Janell) Clayton of Traverse City, Jeanne R. (Gary) Crannell of Ferndale, Wash., six brothers and sisters, Gail, Melvin, Joe and Arden Clark, Marjorie Jones and Esther Sias, ten grandchildren, one great grandson, many nieces and nephews.
