Light surpasses 1,000 points

Ellsworth wins, 67-62

CENTRAL LAKE - Central Lake senior Zach Light topped 1,000 points for his career late in the first quarter on Friday en route to posting a game-high 28 points and 24 rebounds. Unfortunately for Light and the Trojans, in-county rival Ellsworth still came away with a 67-62 win. Despite the loss, Central Lake head coach Quinn Barry was pleased with his team's performance.

"I thought it was one of the better games we played all year,"Barry said. "Ellsworth got off to a lead, but the kids fought back.

"The offense looked pretty good.Ó

Light reached his 1,000 point milestone at the 2:30 mark in the first quarter.

"We're thrilled for him,"Barry said. "He's spent so much time in the gym, and he has worked so hard.Ó

After Light scored a basket to give him 1,001 career points, the game was stopped and Light was presented with the game ball.

"The kids have confidence in him and get him the ball,"Barry said. "He's a unique threat; he's got a good 3-point shot, and he's outstanding in the low post. Out of all the kids I've ever coached, he's the best offensive rebounder I've ever had.Ó

Jarod Steenwyck hit a big 3-pointer at the end of the first half to put the Lancers up 32-29 at the break. Central Lake played tight with the Lancers the rest of the way, but they couldn't get over the hump. Dylan Sommer put in 10 points for Central Lake.

Ellsworth, who was coming off a loss to Mackinaw City, was led by Steenwyk with 24 points. Jared Danbert added 20 for Ellsworth.

Ellsworth head coach Tex Drenth did not return calls seeking comment.
