Local News PUBLISHED:
Council members, with member James Baker absent, made some more recommendations to trim from what has been termed an already-tight budget for the 2007-08 year. President John Hanson doubted whether the expense for a keyless gate at the villageÕs compost site would be necessary. Under the proposal, residents would get a key card at the offices to allow them to enter the site, which is not monitored and at times has had compost deposited there from nonresidents. Although there is a sign warning the site is for local resident use only, it is disregarded. Members discussed the possibility of levying fines and arranging for additional monitoring, using the revenues to get the necessary funds back. "It just seems to me like it is a gated community and it almost bugs me a little, but I really donÕt know," Hanson said. "We could possibly put up a video camera there. I just think there are some other ways to spend the money rather than through a gated system." On the flip side, members approved a request for the purchase of two "traffic mirrors," in the downtown district. The mirrors, which are popular in European countries, are already in place along some roads in the Shanty Creek area, it was reported. Traffic mirrors are convex mirrors placed at the intersection of two streets or at the intersection of a street and a private driveway. The intent of this mirror is to assist a driver on a restricted site distance approach to enter the intersection safely. In other budget matters: ¥ Council members discussed what they termed one of the largest line-item budget expenditures, the maintenance of the motor pool building. The all steel building, constructed in 1979, leaks and village employees have to clean it before they can go out on their errands. ¥ Members decided against purchasing new 800 megahertz scanners, allowing village employees to monitor the police calls. The current scanners are not able to handle the higher frequency, Council Executive/Clerk Janet Person said. Staff will still be able to relay messages to the department via cell phones and also by calling the Sheriff Department, members said. ¥ Decided to place the new logos on village vehicles in 2008, rather than this year. The new logos were approved late last year and the village is in the process of integrating them into their operations.
