Area bands perform exceptionally at district event



ELK RAPIDS - The Central Lake and Ellsworth high school bands both received the highly coveted Superior Division I Rating at the Michigan School Band and Orchestra AssociationÕs District 2 Band and Orchestra Festival held at Elk Rapids on Saturday, Feb. 24. 2007. And the bands did it in style as both received Division I ratings from all four adjudicators.

The adjudicators were Patrick Flynn, director of bands at Portage High School; Carl Gippert, retired director of bands at Farmington Hills High School and Edward Lucius, director of bands at Redford Thurston High School. The sight reading judge was Joel Shaner, director of bands at Jackson High School.

The bands received letter grades in the five categories ofÊ tone, intonation, rhythm, technique, and interpretation. The Central Lake band received 1 A+, 9 As, 4 A-s, and 1 B+ from the three concert judges, and 2 As , 2 A-s, and 1 BÊ from the sight reading judge.

The Ellsworth band received 5 As, 6 A-s, 4 B+s from the three concert judges, and 3 A- and 2 Bs from the sight reading judge.

The Central Lake band performed "Kentucky Pride March" by John Edmondson, "American Riversongs" by Pierre LaPlante for the required number, and the first two sections of "Simple Gifts" by Frank Ticheli for its selected piece.Ê

The Ellsworth band performedÊ "El Gato Salvaje March" by Robert E. Foster; "Highland Legend" by John Moss for the required number, and Ò"IncantationsÓ" by Robert W. Smith for its selected piece.

"The communities of Central Lake and Ellsworth can certainly be proud of the two bands' accomplishments," said director Jim Schoensee.Ê "Both bands played so very, very well. All of the hard work and dedication to detail during rehearsals Êwas readily evident during their performances. The judges were impressed by the tone and musicality of both bands, and were especially pleased with the quality literature the bands performed. We were so happy to see the many family and friends from the two communities out to support the students."

The bands hav qualified for the MSBOA state band and orchestra festival to be held the weekend of April 27 and 28 at site to be determined.
