Canine units assist in manhunt

Reporters were briefed with the medical condition of Stephen Grant during a press conference Sunday, March 4 at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. Grant, a Macomb County resident, was the subject of a massive manhunt for the alleged murder of his wife, Tara Lynn Grant. The search came to northern Michigan when tips led police to the Wilderness State Park in Emmet County, just west of Mackinaw City. According to Kalkaska Sheriff William Artress, the Northern Michigan Mutual Aid Task Force, which includes canine units from both Antrim and Kalkaska counties, assisted in the search for Grant.Ê Medical Chief of Staff Dr. John Bednar said Grant was in serious condition upon arrival, but later had been upgraded to stable. "He suffered from hypothermia and frost bite on his feet," Dr. Bednar said, "but is expected to make a full recovery." Dr. Bednar continued, "Grant has been awake and alert, and has been cooperative with hospital staff.Ó"Grant was expected to remain in the hospital overnight for continued observation, then transported to Macomb County where he would face charges.
