Wendell Lewellen Jr



Wendell Gladstone Lewellen, Jr.. of Ann Arbor, Mich., died March 18, 2007, at Huron Woods.

Mr. Lewellen was born March 13, 1922, in Detroit to the late Wendell Gladstone and Hazel Hardsog Lewellen. A graduate of Baldwin High School in Birmingham, Mich., DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., and Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., he married Jane Eleanor Thomas in Birmingham on Oct. 3, 1942, and she survives.

Mr. Lewellen served in the Army during World War II teaching English to Chinese pilots in Palo Alto. He moved to Ann Arbor in 1955 where he lived until 1987 when he retired to Mt. Dora, Fla., in the winters and Bellaire in the summers; he returned to Ann Arbor in 2003.

Mr. Lewellen owned and operated Imperial Industries, Inc. in Belleville, Mich., until his retirement. He and his wife held pilot licenses and piloted a small airplane for business and pleasure. He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Ann Arbor, the First Congregational Church of Mt. Dora and several social organizations in Mt. Dora.

He is survived by four children; Barbara (Douglas) Powell of Lafayette, Ind., Wendell "Buck" (Jeanne) Lewellen III of Ann Arbor, Thomas (Laura) Lewellen of Highland, Mich., Cynthia (Chris) Coble of Indianapolis, Ind., ten grandchildren; Rachel (Donavan Yarnall) Powell, Philip Powell, Nicholas Lewellen, Andrew Lewellen, Emily Lewellen, Margaret (Steve) Dale, Geoffrey Lewellen, Benjamin Lewellen. Rebekah Coble, Hannah Coble and two great-grandchildren.

He is also survived by two brothers; Donald (Carol) Lewellen of Westlake, Ohio, and William (Millicent) Lewellen of Plymouth, Mich.; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Muehlig Funeral Chapel, Ann Arbor.
