Sports PUBLISHED:
So it was for Central Lake with Zach Light, who has played such an integral role for the Trojans. Light gathered in the usual postseason honors befitting a player of his talent and skills. One of the more prestigious awards was being named to the Honorable Mention list by the Associated Press All-State panel and by the Detroit Free Press, along with Bellaire's Brad Guy and Ellsworth's Jared Danbert (see story in March 26 edition). The award signifies Light's stature as one of the elite athletes in the state, and not just the conference or the area. His choice to be one of the five players selected to the inaugural Up North All-Star squad was a no-brainer after the season he fashioned to lead the Trojans. As the team's starting center, it was Light's responsibility to be a presence inside the paint - on defense as well as offense. Light averaged 25.7 points a game, with a high of 46, and surpassed 1,000 for his career. Many of his points came off the offensive glass, where he was indeed dominating at times. He led the team in rebounding with an average of 15 boards per game, and was instrumental in getting the Trojans' key second-chance baskets. "Zach is one of the most prolific scorers in Central Lake history," head coach Quinn Barry said. "He is a tremendous competitor with a great chance at playing at the next level." Light will be an asset for any college program with his size and versatility. A tireless worker, Light isn't afraid to spend extra time in the gym to make himself a better player. The Trojans will miss his imposing presence next season. |
