Eagles win conference meet



CENTRAL LAKE - It was close. Real close. But, in the end the Bellaire Eagles managed to nose past Mancelona in the first Ski Valley Conference track meet of the season last Tuesday at Central Lake High School.

The Eagles soared to the first place finish by scoring 128 points, while the Ironmen tallied 120 for second place. Central Lake was fourth with 24. Alanson-Littlefield tallied 9.

David Bergey picked up a first place for the Ironmen in the discus with a throw of 106 feet, 3 inches. His teammate, Ernie Hartzell was third with a toss of 87 feet.

Also scoring in the discus for the Ironmen were Cody Aldrich, who came in eighth with a throw of 71 feet, 7 inches, and Tim Pierz, 11th with a 54-foot, 10-inch heave.

Hartzell picked up a first for the Ironmen in the shot put, heaving it 36 feet, 7.25 inches.

Bergey finished fourth with a throw of 33-6, Pierz took 10th place with a throw of 29-.05 and Aldrich was 12th with a throw of 26-1.5. Mancelona took the first two places in the high jump, with Michael Herczak first with a leap of 5 feet, 3 inches and Matt Leader took second with a jump of 5-1.

Adam Duerksen won the 110-meter high hurdles in a time of 15.71 seconds, while Ben Williams was sixth in the time of 23.18 seconds.

Herczak picked up his second first place of the day in the 400-meter dash, turning in a time of 55.10 seconds.

Andrew Bean was third in 1:01.10 and Williams sixth in 1:11.60.

Casey Palmer was second in the pole vault, clearing 8 feet, 6 inches. Leader finished third with a height of 8 feet.

Herczak took second in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 3 inches. William Bowen finished sixth with a jump of 16 feet, 5 inches. Kyle Susinko was 10th (14-7.75), Williams finished 12th (13-3.5).

The Ironmen were first in the 3200-meter relay as Brian McDaniel, Michael Churchill, Nick Grody and Josh Lockman combined for a time of 9:35.10.

Josiah Simmonds finished third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.38 seconds, Martel Easter was fifth in 12.97 seconds and Tony Hall sixth in 13.16 seconds.

Peter Churchill contributed a third place in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:24.20, while Brian McDaniels finished sixth in 5:40.60 and Michael Churchill was seventh in 5:41.80.

Duerksen was second in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 47.30 seconds. Williams finished fifth in a time of 59.60 seconds.

Josh Lockman picked up a third place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:25.70, Michael Churchill was fifth in 2:36.10, Steve Elder seventh in 2:42.90 and Daniel Vandergriff finished 10th in 2:50.90.

Running on their home track for the first time this season after spending most of the pre-season working out indoors because of the poor weather gave the Central Lake Trojans a boost.

But with such small numbers to call on, they fell well short of the mark against the likes of Bellaire and Mancelona.

Kevin Dick picked up a sixth place in the shot put with a heave of 31 feet, 1/4 inch. Mike Barnett had an 11th place finish with a throw of 26 feet, 11 inches, while Robert Hoogerhyde was 13th with a throw of 26 feet, 1.5 inches and Jeremiah Betz took 14th place.

Mike Haydell took a fourth place in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 1 inch. Levi Antoine finished eighth in the even with a jump of 15 feet, 7.5 inches and Betz was 13th with a leap of 12 feet, 10.75 inches.

Betz finished eighth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 14.48 seconds, while Barnett was right behind him in ninth place with a time of 14.61, and Hoogerhyde clocked 15.28 for 11th place. Andrew Foss was fourth in the 1600- meter run, turning in a time of 5:28.50.

Antoine came in eighth with a time of 5:47.10 and Haydell was 15th. Hoogerhyde added a seventh place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:16.00, Haydell picked up a third place in the 300- meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 49.30 and Foss was second in the 800- meter run with a time of 2:25.30.
