Johnson triple winner for CL Trojans



BELLAIRE Ñ Kari Johnson was a triple winner for the Central Lake Trojans girls' track team a six-team meetÊhosted byÊBellaireÊon Wednesday, April 25.

Johnson, who set a new school record the week before, recorded her first victory in the 1600-meter run. She easily beat her nearest challenger from Grand Traverse Academy, hitting the tape in a time of 5:40.01. Second place was 6:18.48.

She also won the 3200-meter run, finishing that race in a time of 12:25.95, as well as the 800-meter run with a time of 2:39.80 in a dazzling display.

Rachel Eklund also came away with a first place finish, pacing the field in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 54 seconds.

Central Lake also had a first in the 3200-meter relay, as all of the Trojans who ran in the race established new personal records Ñ including a 2:25 800-meter by Johnson Ñ to catch Ellsworth.

Ellsworth had a 100-meter lead when Johnson took the baton. "Dani Haydell and Rachel Eklund contributed greatly, scoring points in the pole vault, hurdles and middle distances," said Central Lake coach Joe Shay.

"Freshman Jillian Hines, in only her third meet, made great progress in the shot put, finishing second. I am looking forward to some great times this week at invitationals."

The Trojans were fifth as a team with 90 points. Grand Traverse Academy won the meet, scoring 108. Bellaire and Mancelona tied for second with 102.

Rachel Eklund picked up a second place finish in the pole vault, clearing the bar at a height of 6 feet, 6 inches.

Hines threw the shot a distance of 24 feet, 7 inches for her second place finish. She also took eighth place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 15.73 seconds.

Danielle Haydell was third in the 1600-meter run with a time of 6:25.78, and she was third in the 800-meter run as well with a time of 2:56.66. Sarah Eklund had a fourth place finish in the 400-meter run with a time of 1:16.01.
