Obituaries PUBLISHED: Phillip was born May 12, 1932, in Mancelona, and was preceded in death by his mother Irene E. Long and his father Charles H. Osterrout. Phillip attended Alma College on a vocal music scholarship, and went on to receive additional degrees from Central Michigan University and the University of Michigan. He was most proud of his master's degree in library science from the University of Michigan, and supported the U of M Alumni Association until his death. Phillip also supported the University by wearing his "Bo" cap almost daily. Phillip taught instrumental music and English in addition to working as a high school librarian during a career in education that spanned from 1953 until 1986. He was a prolific reader, and a gifted vocal musician. Phillip found great peace and happiness tending to a variety of farm animals after moving to Big Rapids in 1972. In 1954, he married Allene J. Stolt, who survives. Also surviving are their children, Christopher W. Long, Barry E. Long, Melissa B. Long and Camilla J. Martin. Ten bright and beautiful grandchildren also survive, Tara N. Long, Erin M. Long, Alicia A. Long, Virginia J. Long, Nancy E. Long, Phillip A. Long, Whitaker R. Martin, Margaret A. Martin, Arielle N. Long-Seabra and Anson P. Long-Seabra. Phillip will be greatly missed by his family, and he valued honesty and free thought above all else. His spirit lives on in those who choose to look at and see the world not in terms of black and white but rather in "one hundred shades of gray." Ê Per Phillip's wishes there will be no formal services. Memorial contributions in his name may be made for the Spectrum Health Care Facility in Reed City. Arrangements are entrusted to the Mohnke Funeral Home in Big Rapids. |
