It wasn't a good hitting day for us," said Bellaire coach Katie Verellen. Verellen was encouraged by the effort her team showed while playing six games in less than a week. "We came out and played a good Class C team. We were competitive and we showed what we were made of. We need to take that and move on from here," said Verellen. Ê Eagles sweep Ironmen Ê The Eagles moved to 9-1 in Ski Valley Conference play with a sweep of Mancelona on Monday, Apr. 28. It was another slow start for Bellaire, but Edgecomb kept the Mancelona bats silent with a stellar pitching performance. Edgecomb tossed a no-hitter in the first game as she fanned 17 Mancelona batters to earn a 2-1 win. "Mancelona's got a good team, so it's a big win for us," said Verellen. "We were slow getting our bats going, but when we needed to, we got it done." The Ironmen took a 1-0 lead in the opening inning, but the Eagles pulled out the victory with two runs in the final two frames. Edgecomb scored in the sixth inning when she reached base with a single and came home on an RBI double by Mary Walsh. In the seventh inning Montana Bartsch got on with a walk, Shawl advanced the runner with a sacrifice bunt and Amanda Rade moved Bartsch to third with a single. Amber Marshall drove in the winning run with a ground out to shortstop. Edgecomb (three for three, double, two singles) and Walsh (two for three, double, single) led the Bellaire bats. Bellaire struck for two runs in the first and fourth innings to take a 4-1 win in the second game. Mancelona scored its lone run in the fourth inning. Kara Liverance and Sherri Smith had two singles each to lead the hitters, while Edgecomb had a single and a double. Edgecomb, Walsh and Bartsch all had one run batted in. Edgecomb struck out six, walked three and gave up three hits in seven innings to earn the win. Ê Eagles dominate Harbor Light Ê Bellaire picked up two non conference wins on Tuesday, Apr. 29, when the Lady Eagles downed Northern Lakes Conference Harbor Light Christian 10-2 and 14-4. Edgecomb was the winning pitcher in both games as she struck out seven, walked one and gave up three hits in the opener and then fanned seven, walked just two and gave up four hits in the nightcap. For the night Edgecomb (triple, two doubles, single, four RBIs), Rade (three singles, two RBIs), Comben (two singles, two RBIs), Shawl (single, two RBIs) and Nicole Tipton (single) led the Bellaire hitters.
