Duerkson helps hurdle competition



MANCELONA - Adam Duerksen kept rolling right along in the hurdle events for the Mancelona Ironmen boys' track team, winning both events in both meets last week.

In fact, Duerksen won three seperate events at a quadrangular meet on Wednesday, May 2, and was a double winner again on Friday, May 4, in the Mancelona Invitational.

The Ironmen were second in the invitational. Duerksen won the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.67 seconds and was first in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles with a new invitational record time of 39.77 seconds.

He also had a second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.08 seconds. He was third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.97 seconds, and Josiah Simmons finished fourth in 12.44 seconds. Mike Herczak took first in the long jump with a leap of 17 feet, 9 1/2 inches, and Martel Easter was eighth with a jump of 16 feet, 9 1/2 inches. The Ironmen won the 400-meter relay in a time of 47.83 seconds, and were second in the 800-meter relay with a time of 1:39.55.

The Ironmen finished second in a Ski Valley The Ironmen were fourth in the 3200-meter relay with a time of 9:14. Ernie Hartzell took seventh in the shot put with a throw of 37 feet, 5 inches and David Bergey was 10th with a throw of 34 feet.

Mike Herczak finished second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.43 seconds. Josh Lockman was eighth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:16, and Will Bowen took 10th in a time of 2:19.

The Ironmen finished second in a Ski Valley Conference quadrangular meet at Indian Lakes on Wednesday, May 2, with 106 points. Inland Lakes scored 180 points for first place. Gaylord St. Mary's was third with 22.

Mike Herczak took first place in the high jump at 5 feet, 9 inches, won the 400meter run in a time of 54.99 seconds and was first in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 8 inches.

Adam Duerksen won the 110-meter high hurdles in a time of 19.37 seconds, the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 42.21 seconds, the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.45 seconds and the 200-meter dash in a time of 23.73 seconds.

Peter Churchill paced the field in the 800-meter run with a first place time of 5:09 and took first in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:08. David Bergey was first in the discus with a throw of 105 feet, 10 inches. Herczak finished second in the 200-meter dash with a time 24.17 seconds. The Ironmen were second in the 320-meter relay in a time of 9:42.96.

Bergey was second in the shot put with a throw of 35 feet, 6 inches. Ernie Hartzell finished third in the shot.

Josiah Simmons was third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.05 seconds. Martel Easter took a third place in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 5 1/2 inches.

Will Bowen came in third in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:18, while Josh Lockman finished fourth in 2:19. Easter took fourth place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.58 seconds. Casey Palmer finished fourth in the pole vault at 9 feet.

In the girls' invitational meet, Jenelle Spires had the highest finish for the Ironmen with a second place in the 100-meter dash where the sophomore finished in a time of 14.13 seconds.
