BELLAIRE - Sometimes
it isn't what you
know, but who you know.
Other times, it's who
you're married to.
For the Antrim County
Democratic Party, having a
vice chairperson married to
film-maker Michael
Moore, developed into a
unique fundraiser and put
Bellaire in nationwide conversation.
During a scheduled
fundraising lunch at Gio's,
Kathleen Glynn, Moore's
wife, addressed the possibility
of her husband having
a special screening of
his latest movie in Bellaire.
Moore, a Flint native
and Cannes Film Festival
award winner, was in the
process of finishing his latest
movie "Sicko," a movie
that focuses on many
health care issues - profits
of pharmaceutical companies,
rising costs of
healthcare and difficulties
with insurance companies
and HMOs.
Since that meeting, area
residents have been continuously
asking when the
movie will be done and if
it would be shown in Bellaire,
before a nationwide
release.
May 17, they found out
Antrim County would
have an unofficial premiere,
before the official
premiere June 19, and national
release June 29.
The movie was viewed
by many at this year's
Cannes Festival, where it
received some encouraging
reviews, that suggests
the movie pushes on a sore
spot for many Americans.
Time Magazine's Jeffrey
Kluger said the movie
"will have many moviegoers
angry enough to
gouge holes in their armrests."
Peter Brunette, of
the Boston Globe, said
"it's very much in the
Michael Moore vein - hilarious,
but I was crying
through about a third of it."
Moore made special arrangements
with movie
distributors, to have a
viewing of the movie in
Bellaire, June 16. Along
the movie theme, tickets
for the fundraiser are
shaped like Band-Aids,
though acquiring them
isn't as simple as appearing
at the ticket window
with cash.
Since the ACDP benefits
from the proceeds, legal
procedures must be followed
to purchase tickets.
Each buyer must fill out a
form at
www.antrimdems.org to
request tickets.
