Softball run ends with district title

JOHANNESBURG - The seniors on the Central Lake softball team got their hardware before leaving.

The Trojans' run went to the regionals at Johannesburg Saturday, where their season ended with a 9-0 loss to Harbor Light Christian. They had both difficulty in the field and at the plate against Harbor Light, which had tremendous pitching depth.

Michelle Edwards started the game for Central Lake and pitched all seven innings. Coach Connie Spence says she didn't receive much help from the defense behind her.

"Errors really killed us," Spence said, "10 players had at least one error during this game."

Errors led to missed opportunities to foil Swordsmen scoring chances, meanwhile, sophomore pitcher Kaylee Hewitt had the Trojans baffled at the plate. She had eight strikeouts and pitched the complete game for Harbor Light.

Edwards and Theresa Palka had hits for the Trojans, who have a district title to reflect on.

"It's a disappointing way to end the season, but at least our seniors got a district trophy," Spence said, "They've never done that before."

Harbor Light went on to win the regional, when its first-option pitcher Hannah Hewitt, took the mound. They defeated Rapid River 1-0 in an eight-inning regional final. The Swordsmen didn't allow a run in their 15 innings of regional play Saturday.
