Patton leads first win, Trojans lose final

JOHANNESBURG - If the Central Lake baseball team could have spread out its offense more evenly in the regionals, it may have a regional championship today.

However, the Trojans ended their season with a district championship Saturday, after winning the regional semifinal at Johannesburg, but dropping the regional final.

Brent Patton had an oustanding performance for Central Lake in the opener, basically single-handedly ending Harbor Light Christian's season.

He had two home runs in the 12-1 win, including a grand slam that put the mercy rule in effect, giving the Trojans a win in the opener. Patton homered in both the opening inning and the fifth, with the Trojans putting up five runs in each inning.

Ryan Crawley held the Harbor Light hitters at bay, pitching the victory while allowing only three hits. He didn't allow a run until the fourth inning, and never allowed the Swordsmen a serious threat to come back.

Patton looked to take his dominant performance to the mound in the regional final, as the Trojans faced Rudyard.

The momentum from the first win, didn't lead to a victory in the final, and Central Lake was defeated 12-4.

The Central Lake defense did its job early as two players were picked off second in the opening innings. But Patton, was hit with a pair of balks that helped the Bulldogs score three runs in the second inning.

Crawley came in to relieve Patton not long after, but Rudyard continued to score. The Bulldogs put up another trio of runs in the third inning, to take a 6-1 lead.

The Trojans mounted a comeback, scoring four runs and closing the gap to 7-4. But Rudyard kept them scoreless the remainder, while adding insurance runs late.

Rudyard advanced to play Lake Leelanau St. Mary's in the state quarterfinals at Gaylord.
