Central Lake beats down Atlanta, 47-0

CENTRAL LAKE - You don't get much better offensive balance than Central Lake's varsity football team did in last Thursday's 47-0 shutout win over Atlanta at home.

Four players rushed for 60 yards or more as the Trojans won for the second straight week. Central Lake had a 20-0 lead at halftime. That kind of offensive strength is hard to handle, and Atlanta failed to find an answer on defense.

A large chunk of the credit has to go to the Trojans' offensive line, those unsung heroes in the trenches whose performance goes largely unnoticed by the fans ... unless someone makes a mistake and gets called for holding or jumping offsides.

When that front four is firing off the ball, and sustaining their blocks downfield, it breaks the backs open for large gains. That breeds success.

Central Lake laid the wood to Johannesburg-Lewiston in the season opener two weeks ago, pounding the ball down their throats and hammering out a convincing 30-6 victory.

Head coach Adam Grybauskas didn't alter the script much for last week's game, keeping the ball on the ground and passing only sparingly.

It worked to perfection, as the Trojans controlled the ball and ate up time on the clock with every offensive possession.

Landon Waller finished as the Trojans' leading ball carrier, gaining 97 yards rushing. He also contributed 25 yards on pass receptions, and scored two touchdowns.

Also getting into the end zone twice for the Trojans was Nolan Howes, who was the second leading rusher with 72 yards. Travis Rogers picked up 67 yards on the ground, and Jarod Danbert had 60 yards rushing and another 35 in pass receptions.

Pacing the defensive charge for the Trojans was Zach Light, who had eight tackles, a quarterback sack, jarred the ball loose on one tackle and recovered an Atlanta fumble as well.

Howes' offensive performance was matched by his defensive play, as he finished the game with two sacks. Jason Barrett came up with an intercepted pass.

Central Lake is at Forest Area on Friday night. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
